------ Overview ------
Basketball is a game of adjustments. Coaches are constantly adjusting the
player mix and game strategy to match, or take advantage of their opponent.
StatsNOW! was developed to provide coaches with immediate game statistics to
help them analyze the current situation and make proper adjustments.
StatsNOW! to allows one to enter game data (shots, rebounds, etc.) for both
teams during a basketball game. The program automatically compiles individual
and team statistics which can be viewed at any time on the MessagePad.
Coaches can also review the game play-by-play, or download the game data,
including shot charts, to an Excel Spreadsheet.
------ About the Program ------
StatsNOW! is shareware. Please register the software if you choose to keep it.
The version 2.01 of StatsNOW! Is fully functional. If you use it, please
register. Registration information is available on the ABOUT screen of the
program.
------ StatsNOW! Reference ------
-- Background
StatsNOW2.0 utilizes an event log to record game information. Every event you
enter during is saved in a compressed form. Each event includes:
1) the time the event was recorded (game period and minutes)
2) the player and team
3) the action, such as steal, foul, shot attempt...
4) additional information, such as shot location
The program then computes the stats for the game based on the event log when
ever you ask for them. This computation occurs in less than a second.
-- Overview
StatsNOW! has five views.
1. Overview - (by pressing the overview dot) for selecting a game or deleting
games.
2. Team - (by pressing the Team or New button) for entering player names and
numbers, and setting up game parameters such as period length.
3. Game - (by pressing the Game button) for entering data during a game
4. Stats - (by pressing the Stats button) for viewing and printing game
statistics
5. Shots - (by pressing the Shots button) for viewing and printing shot charts
The Export button displays a slip for exporting a play-by-play and can be
accessed in any view.
The operation of each view is described below.
--- Overview Operation ---
The overview works generally as expected, except that filing and printing is not
supported. Printing can be done from the Stats or Shots view.
-- Deleting a Game:
Select a game or group of games by checking the box next to the game
description. Select "Delete" from the routing menu at the bottom of the screen.
You can delete all but the current game.
-- Opening a game:
Select a game by tapping on the game title. Your current game will close, and
the new game will be loaded.
--- Team View Operation ---
The Team view is divided in to two section: Team/Player names and game parameter
sections. You can only see players for one team at a time. Pressing the
Home/Visitor button toggles between the two teams.
-- Entering Team Names:
Write the team name in the edit field beneath the Home or Visitor title
You should also provide a two letter designator for the team, such as TG for the
Tigers.
-- Entering Player Names and Numbers:
Select the correct team, Home or Visitor.
Select an unnamed player for a particular team by tapping on that player in the
player list. The name and number of that player will appear in the edit field
beneath the player list. Edit the name of the player by writing in the edit
field or by tapping on the adjacent key pad Change the players number by
tapping on the numbers above the adjacent keypad. Single digit numbers require
a leading zero, e.g. 01 or 05.
-- Adding Players:
To add a player tap on the Add Player button. An untitled player will be added
to the player list. Edit the player name and number as described in the
previous paragraph. The program
supports an 19 players per team.
-- Deleting Players:
The the Del Player button deletes the LAST player in the list. You must
have at least six players on a team and you cannot delete any player currently
playing in the game. (By default the first five players in the list are the
starting five) If you need to delete a player who is currently in the game, go
to the Game view, substitute out that player, return to the Player view and
delete the player.
-- Adding an Entire Team:
Once you've entered a team and its players you do not need to reenter the
players in future games. Tap the Sel Team button and select the team to load.
The player list will be automatically filled in. Note: StatsNOW does not
duplicate team names in the Sel Team popup. It uses the first occurance of that
team. You may still need to edit the player list if the team roster has changed
-- Setting the period length:
Tap on the period length popup and select a period length for regulation and
overtime.
-- Setting the number of fouls before a bonus:
Tap on the bonus popup and select the number of fouls. When a team has exceeded
the specified number of fouls in a half, the word "Bonus" is displayed beneath
the team fouls in the Game view.
-- Setting the starting court sides:
You may select which side of the court is the offensive side at the start of the
game for each team by tapping on the Court Side button. This button toggles
between the two options. The two letter team designator indicates which side of
the court is that teams offensive basket at the start of the game.
-- Setting the team colors:
Select a color (light or dark) for each team using the square box in the bottom
right corner of the team section. It is not necessary to have a different color
selected for each team, but the visual cue helps with data entry.
-- Quarters or Halves:
Select quarter or halfs for games with 4 or 2 periods respectively.
--- Game View Operation ---
The Game View shows the court as the observer see it, with the team located
under their offensive basket (the team locations on the screen automatically
switch at half time). You can set the initial location of the teams in the
Player view. The Game View also displays the current score, team fouls and
accumulated time-outs.
-- Basic Operation:
Events are recorded by selecting the action and then the player associated with
the action. Once you select an action, such as shot attempt or steal, StatsNOW
prompts you with a list of players. At that point you may:
1) You may tap outside the popup to cancel the entry,
2) tap on the player number to record the entry,
or 3) tap on ALL to bring up a list of all the players on the team, even if
they are not currently on the court. Then select the appropriate player or
cancel the entry by tapping outside the popup.
Note: You can record team rebounds by tapping on ALL and then selecting the
team signified by it two letter designator.
-- Player substitutions:
To substitute players tap the Sub button for the desired team. Then select the
5 players who are currently playing. Player fouls are listed in parentheses
after the player number). You once you make a substitution you cannot set the
clock back and change the substitution, or undo a substitution, but you can do a
new substitution and correct any errors.
-- Entering Game Data:
Game stats are entered by tapping on the court, or a button and then selecting
the player associated with the event. StatsNOW will popup a list of available
players for the operations. Depending on the action you select that may include
a list of players from both teams (such as in a rebound) or from only one team
(such as in a shot attempt).
-- Recording a Shot Attempt:
You record an attempted shot by tapping on the court where the shot occurred.
The program automatically determines whether it is a two or three point attempts
based on the position in the court. An attempt will be indicated on the court
with a "2" or "3" to indicate the shot type. Then select the appropriate player
in the popup.
-- Recording a Shot Made:
You record a shot made by tapping on the round basket after you've recorded a
shot attempt. You will not be prompted for a player number via a popup. The
shot is associated with the player who just made the attempt. The text in the
bottom center of the court will also change to indicate a shot made.
- Alternate method:
Tapping in the basket without first marking an attempt location on the court
will record a two point shot and attempt. In this case you will be prompted for
a player number via a popup. The shot chart will show this shot a directly
below the basket. The play-by-play will indicate this shot as a "Layin"
-- Rebounds:
Tap on the appropriate rebound button at the end of the court and select the
correct player. An offensive or defensive rebound will be recorded depending on
the team of the player you select.
-- Put Back:
You can record an offensive rebound followed by a shot attempt by tapping on the
PutBack button (the block with the arrow directly above Rebound). If the player
makes the basket simply tap the basket.
-- Free Throws:
Select the type of free throw and then check off the shots made. Data for the
free throws are not recorded until you have checked all the shots. You are free
to make substitutions, or even record additional
fouls while the free throw view is visible.
-- Other Game statistics:
All other game data is recorded using the buttons located down the center of the
court.
-- Using the Game Clock:
The clock is used to record player time. The clock automatically starts
whenever you enter game data, or you can start or stop it manually by
tapping on the clock digits. The clock automatically stops at free throws,
fouls and time-outs and automatically restarts as soon as you close the free
throw view or enter any game data. I've found it best to ignore the clock
as much as possible and let the automatic operation take care of stopping and
starting the clock. Your clock won't match the game clock exactly, but it will
be close enough to get a good estimate on playing time for each player. If
you find that the clock is getting too far out of synch with the actual game
clock, you may reset it as described below.
-- Resetting the clock:
You can reset the clock when it is not running by tapping on the small clock
icon next to the clock digits. This brings up a small view for setting minutes
and seconds (rounded to the nearest 10 seconds).
When the Adjust Time is checked, StatsNOW automatically changes the time on
every event recorded in the period so that the events fit exactly within the new
clock time. This is especially useful if you find that your clock has run out
before the Official clock. Setting the clock back with Adjust Time checked will
move those event you just recorded back in time so the time they were recorded
more closely corresponds to the Official time.
-- Undoing an Event:
Pressing the Undo button brings up a list of the last 20 entries. Select any
item to remove it. You may undo any event except substitutions
--- Stats View ---
The Stats View displays all the statistics for the current game. Pressing the
Home/Visitor button toggles between the two teams. The team totals are always
listed on the bottom of the screen.
-- Viewing a Players Statistics:
To view a player's statistics scroll the player list using the up/down arrows
until the player of interest is in view. Then tap the side to side button
above the up/down arrow to toggle between the two statistics screens.
-- Viewing Statistics for a Particular Period:
Select the period of interest on the bottom of the screen to see the stats for
that particular period. The statistics will automatically update.
-- Printing Game Statistics
Select the period for which you wish to print the statistics. Then select
"Print Stats" from the routing button on the
bottom of the screen. The game statistics for the selected periods will be
printed for every player on both teams.
--- Shot View ---
The Shot View displays the shot charts for the current game. Pressing the
Home/Visitor button toggles between the two teams.
-- Viewing a Players Shot Chart:
Select one or more player's to see their combined shot charts
-- Viewing Charts for a Particular Period:
Select the period of interest on the bottom of the screen to see the chart for
that particular period. The chart will automatically update.
-- Printing a Shot Chart:
Select the team of interest. Select the desired time period. Tap the routing
button (envelope) and select Print Chart. A shot chart will be printed for the
time period selected. Note that printed shot charts always print the chart for
every player on the team. Shot attempts are indicated by the player's number.
Shots made are indicated by the player's number with a circle around it.
----- Exporting -----
Exporting creates a text file in NewtWork which can later be downloaded to a PC
using NCU ( or anything else you like).
NOTE: The file should be downloaded as a simple ASCII text file - imbedded no
formatting.
The file can be in two forms.
Readable: This is a "human" readable play-by-play of the game. You can read it
directly in NewtWorks or download it to a PC. The file is tab delimited so you
can format it as you please in a workprocessor
Excel: This creates a comma delimited log file which is compatible with the
included Excel Macro.
----- Importing to Excel -----
1) Export the file using the "Excel" option
2) Download the file to a PC as simple ASCII Text
3) Run the provided Excel macro called "Import". You will have to have the
Import worksheet open, but you do not have to put your data on this worksheet.
4) Follow the direction on the macro.
----- Miscellaneous -----
-- Operation Hint from an Experienced User
1 ) If you plan to collect all the stats for both teams you will need two
people. Basketball is simply too fast of a game for one person to keep up with.
One person acts as the spotter, the other the operator.
2) Don't expect to record every stat of a game perfectly the first time you use
StatsNOW!. Like any software, it takes a bit of practice. This is especially
true during a game when the action is nonstop. Butdon't worry, after one or two
games you get the hang of it and find it possible to record every stat for both
teams.
