Temporary Newton Library http://www.stillnewt.org/library How to Camp Out: Hints for Camping and Walking (1877) By John Mead Gould (1839-1930), with illustrations by Prof. Edward S. Morse (1838-1925) Illustrated Newton ebook edition by DJ Vollkasko, Germany 2006, from the Project Gutenberg eText prepared by prepared by Suzanne Lybarger, Brian Janes, Emmy, and the Project Gutenberg Online Distributed Proofreading Team. It is--as far as I know--one of the oldest books on Camping Out, if not the first, and still contains good, solid advice that will apply as long as stars shine over the Outdoors and the dew falls at night. The author is a pretty interesting person, too, and his book is a good and practical read on the topic, even though some things are outdated. But even though we usually don’t go on walkabouts with horse and waggons anymore, one might say the bicycle (or even the motorcar) have replaced that, so most of his comments apply to that or will inspire you to solutions that will match your requirements. Unfortunately, there is no article at Wikipedia on John Mead Gould (1839-1930), so I haven’t been able to append this ebook with biographical background. If you want to know more about him, see http://www.geocities.com/~jmgould jmgould.html , where you’ll find a very detailed biography including his participation during the US Civil War. --DJV.
